Candidates for Orthokeratology Lenses
Dr. Steven Chander works with patients throughout the greater Chicago, Midway, and Garfield Ridge, IL, giving them insight into various treatment options. While laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK are extremely popular, there are numerous alternatives that can prove just as effective. Such is the case with orthokeratology treatment, also known as Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT).
The team at Primary Eye Care Associates would like to go over some of the basics of CRT. We’ll then note who is a good candidate for orthokeratology, a non-surgical solution to refractive errors.
What Is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is an alternative to wearing glasses or undergoing LASIK to treat refractive errors. The process involves wearing specially crafted contact lenses while a patient sleeps. These special contact lenses reshape the corneal contour. This means that the passage of light through the eyes is improved when the patient is awake, allowing them to see clearly without the need for glasses or contacts.
There is no surgery required and no need for corrective lenses while the benefits of overnight CRT last through the waking hours of the day. The CRT lenses provided should be cleaned regularly and kept sanitary, and will only need to be replaced every year or every other year.
Refractive Error and CRT Candidacy
The degree of refractive error a person suffers from will determine if CRT is the right option for them. Orthokeratology is generally best for people who suffer from moderate nearsightedness (astigmatism) and/or slight astigmatism. People with farsightedness (hyperopia) or severe refractive errors will not be able to undergo CRT.
Patient Age and CRT Treatment
One of the best aspects of CRT treatment is that it can be used on patients as young as 7 years old. That means that children can experience the benefits of clear vision without the need for glasses. Teenagers and adults can also benefit from undergoing orthokeratology.
Candidacy for Those Who Can’t Undergo Refractive Surgery
Patients who have thin corneas or have been disqualified from LASIK surgery due to other eye issues are able to undergo orthokeratology, typically without serious impact on wellness. Since CRT does not require surgery to achieve its vision enhancing results, it’s a great alternative to LASIK and other refractive procedures.
Is Orthokeratology Right for Me?
While orthokeratology is a great option for many patients, it may not be the ideal vision treatment for you and your needs. There are many considerations that have to be made when it comes to vision correction, and some patients may find that wearing contacts overnight is not a comfortable or ideal option for enhancing their eyesight.
This is why the consultation process is so important. During your visit to our practice, we can go over all of your questions and concerns about CRT. We’ll help you understand the risks and benefits involved. By speaking with a professional, you can get the right treatment for your needs.
