What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that can damage your optic nerve, eventually leading to blindness.
In a normal eye, aqueous humor (the fluid between the lens and cornea) circulates in and out of the eye continually. Glaucoma is often characterized by this fluid failing to properly circulate and exit the eye, causing abnormally high intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye) that can damage the optic nerve.
The most common type of glaucoma (open-angle glaucoma) develops gradually, and may not become apparent to the sufferer until vision is permanently affected, so it is important to undergo regular eye exams. Our eye doctor uses a variety of tests to screen for glaucoma, including an intraocular pressure test that is conducted during every vision exam.

Our Preventive Approach
Glaucoma Diagnosis
OCT Test
We offer optical coherence tomography (OCT), which uses ultrasound to detect optic nerve damage. It involves a quick scan that takes about 25 seconds for each eye. The OCT test is like taking an MRI of the optic nerve fiber layer, allowing for the earliest detection of glaucoma and changes in advancing glaucoma so we can stay ahead of vision loss.
The fee for the ICT 3D imaging test of the optic nerve is $95, and it is recommended once a year for glaucoma patients. Patients that are at increased risk of glaucoma should undergo the OCT test every four years after age 50.
Other Glaucoma Tests
Visual Field Test
An examination of your full range of vision can reveal glaucoma symptoms. This test typically involves placing a light source around your peripheral vision to test its range.
Family History
During your exam at our Chicago practice serving Midway, Garfield Ridge, and surrounding areas, we will discuss whether any members of your family have glaucoma. A family history of the condition can increase your risk of developing glaucoma, and routine testing should be performed.
Eye Pressure Evaluation and Corneal Thickness
We perform a corneal biometry and ultrasound test that takes just a few seconds per eye. This evaluation measures corneal thickness and enables us to more accurately analyze eye pressure. The fee is $23.50 for each eye.
Neurological Visual Field Testing
Advanced neurological visual field testing evaluates the integrity of peripheral vision, where glaucoma typically starts to damage vision. This test tracks the progression of glaucoma and can diagnose brain disorders such as mini stroke, aneurysm, and tumors. We charge $67 per eye for this test.
Optomap
This advanced 3D imaging system creates a full digital image of your retina, which can reveal where damage has occurred. The optomap® test can also identify conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, which can be related to glaucoma.
Drainage Angle Test
After placing a special contact lens in your eye, Dr. Chander can identify a blocked or narrowed drainage angle.
Schedule an Appointment
Because glaucoma worsens over time, you should seek help immediately if you notice any changes in your vision. You should also undergo yearly testing if you have a family history of the condition. If you have no family history, no symptoms, and have not had an eye exam lately, it's time to book a consultation and start ongoing routine care.
Dr. Steven Chander can perform an eye disease screening to fully assess your ocular health. If he notices that you have glaucoma or any other eye condition, he can offer select treatments and coordinate your care with trusted local ophthalmologists.

Glaucoma Treatment
Ocular Nutrition
At our Chicago practice, we provide ocular nutrition for glaucoma. It can increase the blood flow to the optic nerve and enhance the efficacy of glaucoma medications. The cost of ocular nutrition therapy is $34.95 a bottle.
Eye Drops
In some cases, eye drops are the simplest way to control glaucoma. By applying prescription eye drops several times a day, you can reduce the production of aqueous, thereby alleviating internal pressure.
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery with OMNI
Advanced minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) may be recommended for patients that forget to put in eye drops, need to reduce the number of required medicines to lower eye pressure, or for those that are allergic to medications.
We perform this procedure using the state-of-the-art OMNI® tool, which allows us to create just one corneal incision and treat the drainage canals of the eyes. After surgery, patients experience a reduction in eye irritation, the need for eye drops, and medication co-pays, among other benefits.
Trabeculoplasty
Ophthalmologists can remove precise amounts of tissue with a laser to open the drainage channel and reduce intraocular pressure. The use of a laser makes the procedure less invasive and can result in a quicker and more comfortable recovery.
Peripheral Iridotomy
If you suffer from closed-angle glaucoma, an ophthalmologist can perform a peripheral iridotomy, preventing further damage and pain from occurring. This safe procedure involves using a laser to create a tiny hole in the iris that allows aqueous humor to move directly from the posterior to the anterior chamber.
