Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery

Although cataracts can be managed in the early stages, you will eventually require surgery in order to avoid debilitating vision loss. Fortunately, modern cataract surgery is safe, effective, and capable of restoring excellent vision – with or without corrective eyewear. Learn why Midway and Garfield Ridge chooses Primary Eye Care Associates in Chicago, IL, for cataract diagnosis and surgical coordination.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts develop when protein fibers begin to clump together within the crystalline lens of the eye.

The function of the lens is to refract light as it enters the eye, focusing it upon the retina. The retina then converts this light into nerve impulses sent to the brain, allowing you to perceive images. When a cataract clouds your lens, it blocks the passage of light through the eye to the retina. This can cause your vision to lose definition, and make colors look faded. The effect is often compared to looking out of a frosted window, and it becomes more pronounced as time passes.

Although ample lighting and up-to-date corrective lens prescriptions can be used as conservative solutions in the early stages of cataracts, eye surgery is the only permanent treatment.

According to the National Eye Institute, more than half of all Americans older than 80 either have cataracts or have had cataract surgery.

Thanks to local anesthetic, the procedure is not painful. The surgeons we coordinate with even perform the surgery with the patient conscious.

Cataract Surgery Step-by-Step

If our Chicago, IL, team determines that a cataract is causing your symptoms, we can begin coordinating your surgery, which will be performed at a nearby ambulatory center. During surgery, the clouded natural lens will be removed from your eye and replaced with a synthetic intraocular lens (IOL).

We refer out to established Chicago surgeons, who will remove your cataracts and implant your IOL.

Corneal Incisions

To remove the lens, your surgeon will first make precise incisions in the cornea (the dome-shaped front surface of the eye) using a laser.

Cataract Removal

A special ultrasound tool is used to break the lens into smaller pieces, which are then gently suctioned out through the incisions.

IOL Placement

Once your natural lens has been completely removed, your doctor will implant the IOL. Sutures are not necessary to facilitate the healing of the corneal incisions.

See How Cataract Surgery Works

During cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist removes the clouded natural lens of the eye and replaces it with an artificial lens. Modern IOLs can correct vision at multiple distances, and can even correct astigmatism. Our team can diagnose your cataracts and coordinate your surgery with an established Chicago ophthalmologist.

What Is Cataract Surgery Recovery Like?

Closeup of someone putting in eye drops

While some patients report experiencing improved vision immediately following surgery, it is important to understand that it might take a week or longer for your vision to stabilize. Full recovery can take up to a month. We usually schedule a follow-up visit at our Garfield Ridge office the day after surgery to make certain that you are not experiencing any complications.

After a friend or loved one drives you home from your procedure, plan to rest for the remainder of the day. You might experience a "scratchy" or irritated sensation as you heal. We may prescribe special eye drops to control inflammation, as well as pain relievers such as acetaminophen to control discomfort.

Intraocular Lenses The Key to Restoring Your Vision after Cataract Surgery

Intraocular Lens

What Is an IOL?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are synthetic crystalline lenses that ophthalmologists use to replace the clouded natural lens during cataract surgery. Like prescription eyeglasses, IOLs provide custom vision correction for different distances, and can even be used to address astigmatism.

Monofocal vs. Multifocal

There are many different kinds of IOLs out there. In general, they can be either monofocal (correction for one distance) or multifocal (correction for a range of distances). Some IOLs are even able to correct astigmatism, further enhancing a patient's vision after cataract removal.

Advanced Vision Technology

Our practice in Chicago, IL, can use advanced technology to measure your eyes and determine which type of lens is best for you. We believe in using state-of-the-art tools to fully prepare you to visit a trusted ophthalmologist for your surgery.

Cataract FAQs

From diagnosis to surgery, it's common to have questions about cataracts. We're happy to answer them when you visit our Chicago office, but until then, we'll give you a good foundation with these often-asked queries:

Is cataract treatment permanent?

Many patients wonder if they will only need surgery for each eye once. Luckily, the answer is yes. That's because the lens your surgeon implants is created with longevity in mind, providing a lifetime of cataract-free vision.

Will cataract surgery improve my vision?

After cataract surgery, it's normal to experience 20/20 vision, or very close to it. However, it's still possible for patients to have improved vision, but not perfect vision. In that case, you may still need glasses. We can explain more during your consultation.

Can I have cataracts without even knowing it?

Patients with cataracts affecting their eyes may be unaware of the condition in earlier stages. That's because cataracts may begin with tiny changes to your eye. They may even be asymptomatic, which is why it's important to visit our Chicago team for your yearly eye disease screening and exam.
